The ancient Colosseum of Rome is a paradox: a breathtaking architectural achievement that demonstrates the heights of human skill, yet also a haunting reminder of the cruelty of ancient entertainment, where people were killed for sport.
Construction began under Emperor Vespasian in 72 AD and was completed just eight years later, with some later modifications. Built from limestone, volcanic rock, and concrete, the Colosseum remains the largest freestanding amphitheatre in the world, capable of seating up to 80,000 spectators. The events that took place within its walls included gladiatorial combat, public executions, animal hunts, and even elaborate naval battles for which the arena was flooded.
Following the fall of the Roman Empire, the Colosseum was repurposed many times — as housing, workshops, a cemetery, a den for bandits, and a Christian shrine. Today, it stands as one of Rome’s most visited tourist attractions, a global symbol of the city, and appears on Italy’s 5 euro cent coin.
The Ugears Colosseum model, part of the World Cities collection, is a 1:1000 scale wooden DIY model of this iconic amphitheatre, with finished dimensions of 100 x 75 x 85 mm. Made from 63 laser-cut pieces of art-quality composite wood, the model is rated "Easy" and can be assembled in about 30 minutes. No glue or special tools are required — simply push the pieces out of the boards and snap them together. Illustrated instructions are included in 11 languages (English, German, Ukrainian, French, Polish, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Italian, Chinese and Korean).
This static 3D puzzle makes a beautiful display piece for the home or office and will appeal to travellers, students of Roman history, architecture enthusiasts, or anyone who wants to build and showcase this symbol of Rome.
