These words by poet Emma Lazarus are the welcoming invitation of the colossal goddess of liberty presiding over New York Harbour. She has come to symbolise New York City, the United States of America, and the hope of freedom for people around the world.

Designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, the Statue of Liberty was a gift from France to the United States to commemorate the centenary of U.S. independence. Originally a dull copper colour, the statue soon developed its iconic green patina. She holds a torch representing progress and a tablet representing the rule of law, inscribed with the date of the Declaration of Independence: July 4, 1776. Her crown features seven rays, symbolising the sun, the seven seas, and the seven continents — Lady Liberty extends her light to the entire world. At her feet lies a broken chain, representing the emancipation of slaves. It took six years to raise the funds to build the pedestal, and the completed statue was dedicated in 1886.
